Malvern Residence

  • An almost original Victorian in desperate need of restumping, with a disjointed tacked-on back living space

  • One bathroom (for the whole family)

  • A small pokey kitchen and living/dining area that the family had outgrown

  • Dark dreary colour, with deep blue carpets, yellow cream walls and orange-toned floorboards

THE CHALLENGE

“As a first time renovator I knew roughly the look and things I wanted but didn't have the confidence to put it all together - especially with the fixtures and finishes,” - explains Skye when asked why she engaged the norsu Design team.

  • A large open-plan living, kitchen and dining area

  • A dual workspace study

  • A hardworking laundry zone (that includes multiple drying cupboards)

  • A dedicated parents zone with formal living and generous ensuite and walk in robe

  • A studio in the backyard for growing teenagers

THE BRIEF

“The brief for the back extension revolved around function, opening up the space to create a central hub of the home. Careful consideration to natural light was integral to the project as our clients' number one objective was to create an uplifting, bright and airy home where new memories could be made”. - explains norsu Design's Senior Designer Lauren Bartlett-Bragg

ENTRY/HALLWAY

DESIGNER NOTES

The signature ‘norsu aesthetic’ of modern Australiian-Scandi, paired with calming pastel tones, timber flooring and stunning lighting (both natural and pendant) welcomes you on entry.

  • Custom white powder coated glass steel doors

  • Oak timber flooring

  • Crisp white walls

FROM THE CLIENT

"

I love the skylights in the hallway - we had one in the plans and added another as we were building and then made them both as big as possible so they are both features.  Your eyes are drawn up as soon as you walk in the front door and they just flood the hallway with light.

PARENTS RETREAT

DESIGNER NOTES

Functional storage is always a priority, so as well as a walk in wardrobe and double drawer vanity space, we added custom joinery drawers to the bedroom in a stylish and timeless soft grey. It’s also become one of the client’s favourite spaces to mix and match styling items.

STYLING FEATURES

The combination of cosy quilts, fluffy pillows and layered throws are the key to making this bedroom feel like a dreamy oasis.

  • Bespoke norsu cushions paired with neutral linen that connect to the feature artwork above the bed

  • Soft white sheers for the perfect filtered light

  • Ethnicraft Spindle Bedside Table

HENRY'S ROOM

DESIGNER NOTES

This musical teenager needed a room that matched his needs and was styled to his passions. The dark grey bedhead anchors a mix of striped French linen bedding with the muted tones allowing Henry's guitar collection and curated art prints to shine. We incorporated space within the study desk to accommodate amps and speakers and the feeling of this room oozes humble rockstar.

STYLING FEATURES

  • Grey sheers offer a moodier vibe for this room

  • Eadie Lifestyle French Linen Bedding

  • Wall mount guitar holders add both style and storage

  • Wall prints from norsu Interiors

  • norsu bedhead creates a soft and neutral base for adding a mix of cushions patterns, shapes and colours

  • Artwork gallery wall that adds personality and reflects Lucy's own style,

FROM THE CLIENT

"

The sheers have such a lovely soft look - and when you open the windows they just dance with the breeze, it's heaven.

FORMAL SITTING

DESIGNER NOTES

The custom white powder coated glass steel doors slide open for a grand entrance to this formal sitting space. The sage sheers against the olive walls, along with the creamy oak shelves, terrazzo speckled stone, leather handles - this room feels exactly like it should, refined, warm and intimate.

DESIGNER'S FAVOURITE

"

The sliding set into the formal living space not only looks incredible, creating a stunning moment down the hallway, but they are extremely practical! Sliding doors allow more space for furniture and walkways, and with the glass panels, all of the natural light from the hall can flood into this space too.

THE STUDY

DESIGNER NOTES

The study incorporates several features that we know make a workspace function well, without the clutter. In the lower cupboards we have a pull-out printer drawer, and a filing cabinet drawer, so the inevitable paperwork has a dedicated hidden area.

STYLING FEATURES

Adding personality to the shelving and bench seat area makes this room feel less like an office and more like a tranquil area to work creatively and feel inspired.

  • Irresistibly cosy, the reading nook is made plush with a curly hair sheepskin and cushions by Eadie Lifestyle and norsu Interiors

  • Open shelving style in clusters of grouped objects featuring Objekt Mirrors, Paola & Joy Bianca vase and the Aylar Candle Holder Set (styled without candles).

WET AREAS

DESIGNER NOTES

Challenged with finding a solution to avoid drying racks around the house on inclement weather days (and also a quick clothes-drying solution), we included drying cupboards in the laundry, where floor to ceiling storage cupboard space is also in abundance. Hidden pull out hampers are another clever feature as too is the selection of a glass door with access to the side of the house that brings an abundance of natural light to the laundry.

MATERIALS SELECTION

A hard working laundry doesn't have to look boring. In fact, the right materials selection and carefully designed layout can make this one space absolutely sing.

  • Tiles featured are from Tile Cloud and Cerdomus

  • Tapware from ABI Interiors

  • Wall colour is Dulux Vivid White

Meanwhile in the bathroom, a feature bath adds instant wow factor.

LIVING

DESIGNER NOTES

The joinery throughout the home is a grounding feature that makes such a subtle impact. The use of the soft grey tone against the fresh white walls creates a beautiful moment - giving that wow factor. The use of the linear V Groove lines in parts of the joinery guides your eyes upwards, accentuating the already high ceilings.

FROM THE CLIENT

"

I love walking into that back room - the size and feel of it, all the windows and the sunlight coming in is just beautiful.  The sheer curtains and skylights, it's so calm and relaxing - whether I am cooking in the kitchen or reading on the sofa.

DINING

DESIGNER NOTES

Feature pendants zone the dining area in this huge light-filled back space of the home. Incorporating signature furniture items in creamy oak against a backdrop of white sheers to one end and powder coated glass steel doors at the other has set the scene for many celebrations to be held in this stunning dining area.

FEATURE PIECES

A quality dining table and chairs will serve you and your home well for many years. Featured here we have the Globe West Huxley Curve Dining Table in oak, the Globe West Granada Sleigh Dining Chair in white and styled with a collection of Robert Gordon wares including the Muse Vase, Wheel Bowl and Cake Stand

KITCHEN

DESIGNER NOTES

The heart of the home and the design and materials selection were absolutely key here. With the abundance of windows (including that impressive window splashback), we added indoor-outdoor functionality by adding in a servery window and bench out to the barbecue area. We chose cabinetry to tie together with the VJ panelling in the living room and the oversized butlers pantry is swoon worthy in its own right!

FROM THE CLIENT

"

The pantry is amazing!! It's so big and there is so much space and storage - I have never had this before and I just love it!  I didn't want a sink or food prep area in there, I just wanted storage!  I loved planning and putting all this together - buying all the containers and labels, it was so much fun!

STUDIO

DESIGNER NOTES

Perfect for a multitude of uses but for this family, the studio acts as a teenager's retreat for chilling out with mates, watching movies or simply a private space to unwind.

STYLIST'S COMMENT

"

It was great to have some fun with the studio styling! Setting a scene for movies, we chose some prints that added character and a sense of nostalgia (which is the new cool). Knowing that you can never have too much storage, a trio of Mustard Made lockers add colour and functionality - and the design-your-own norsu custom ottoman is such a gorgeous multi-tasking must-have.
